What is a Patient Liaison Group?
The patient liaison group is a group of people who represent all interested parties in the Downing Street Group Practice. It is a forum in which patients are represented and can make their voices heard. The PLG will actively seek feedback from patients via numerous methods (e.g. a new suggestions box will soon appear in the reception area of the surgery and other initiatives are being progressed - see the Current Projects page for updates).

Why was one formed at this Practice?
The Downing Street PLG set up as part of the National Contract in order for patients to have involvement in the review of the patient surveys. The Downing Street Practice wished to have a broader remit than this sole purpose, and is looking to actively seek feedback on services as well as fund raise for equipment.

Terms of Reference for the PLG
The terms of reference for the PLG are ….
“The promotion of good health by the provision of advice, information, facilities and equipment. Actively supporting the work of the Downing Street Group Practice and in particular the promotion of good relations between all parties”. In other words the aim of the PLG is to act as an interface between all stakeholders acting as a conduit for communications and facilitating the provision of advice, information, facilities and equipment where possible (e.g. this may include fundraising for specific items).

What do the PLG actually do?
The groups specific objectives are to open and maintain channels of communication between all interested parties. Initial work on this area will lead to a patient survey to gather information on what resources are needed within the surgery to help the community access the services available. We will also be asking, “what could be done better”, though we must emphasise that this is not a forum for complaints. Complaints are dealt with via the Practice Manager.
A secondary function of the PLG will be to raise funds e.g. work is already underway to try and raise enough money to purchase a 24 hour ambulatory blood pressure monitor which is 24hour Ambulatory BP monitoring equipment. It is a piece of high tech kit to measure blood pressure at preset intervals over 24hours. The patient wears the monitor and the readings are then analysed by the GP. When a patient attends surgery and is found to have a raised blood pressure this piece of equipment gives accurate readings throughout the day and night and therefore the severity of the problem is diagnosed accurately. Some patients find that just coming to surgery raises their blood pressure and that this is not the case at home and therefore they do not need medication that may otherwise be prescribed or wait for a consultant opinion which delays the diagnosis.
