Peru by Catherine Trezise.
We went, we saw, we conquered !
The sentiments of colleague and friend, Trish Chapman, a practice Nurse at Dr Robinson’s practice and myself.
Our trip to Peru finally came to fruition in May 2006. After a year of fundraising to achieve our target of £5600 and the discovery of our own hidden talents, the hard work and hectic training schedule paid off. Our group of 32 participants raised just over £100,000 for the British Heart Foundation.
Our challenge of the Inca Trail surpassed our expectations and we reached dizzy heights in many ways. The scenery was outstanding with snow capped mountains surrounding our path. Wildlife dotted our tracks, hummingbirds darted in and out of the colourful vegetation, birds of prey hung in the air and we are pleased the tarantula did not find our tent!!
Sun shone from noon to night, every day, clouds only descended after we reached the highest pass at 4,200m. Shortness of breath on the steep climb up and aching knees on the 1300 step descent to our final campsite, and a fair share of mosquito bites all seemed worth it.
An early morning call at 4 am on our final day proved no trouble as we arrived in the peace and tranquillity of our final destination, Macchu Picchu, well in advance of the hoards of international tourist buses.
The enormity of our trip is only now beginning to sink in and we can only say a huge thank you to the many people in the UK and in Peru who enabled us this wonderful experience.
